Kansas City, Missouri - The family of a man who died of mesothelioma won $4.5 milllion Wednesday from three companies who caused his exposure to asbestos, according to KCTV5 News. The family argued that Robert Wagner had worked for years installing tiles and other materials containing asbestos. More than 30 years later, Wagner died of mesothelioma, a cancer the jury found was caused by Wagner’s exposure to asbestos. Wagner’s lawsuit was filed against several companies, the largest of which were were Bondex International Inc., of Ohio, Allied Manufacturing of Springfield, Mo., and Conwed Corporation of Wilmington, Del.

Cancer Research UK reports that exposure to asbestos, which is known to cause a form of cancer called mesothelioma, has also been shown to cause some cancers of the ovary and larynx (voice box) as well, according to recent statements by scientists investigating the issue.
Writing in a review in the Lancet Oncology this month, an international team of World Health Organisation experts claim that there is now “sufficient evidence” that asbestos can also cause cancer of the ovary and the larynx. Basing their conclusion on a new ‘meta-analysis’ of previously published studies, the scientists revealed that people who have been exposed to asbestos are 1.4 times more likely to develop cancer of the larynx than those who have never been exposed to the material, while high levels of exposure are associated with a twofold increased risk of the disease.
The scientists noted that “all types of asbestos are carcinogenic to humans” and say that there is also some evidence to suggest that the substance may increase a person’s risk of cancers of the bowel, stomach and throat. Dr Alison Ross, Cancer Research UK’s senior science information officer, said: “We already know asbestos can cause lung cancer and mesothelioma and this adds two more cancer types to the list.

Maine - The state of Maine leads the nation in having the highest death rate from mesothelioma, according to an article reported by the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. It’s well known that breathing asbestos can lead to mesothelioma, a deadly form of cancer. In the early 1970s, industrial manufacturers stopped the widespread use of asbestos in products such as brake linings, insulation and cement. But the disease take decades to show up, so many people are just getting sick now. A new report shows that Maine has the highest death rate from the disease per capita than anywhere else in the country.
“We noticed that death rate in Maine is 27.5 per million population — the highest rate in the United States,” says Ki Moon Bang, the senior epidemologist at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, which studied mesothelioma mortality rates from 1999 to 2005. During that period, 173 Maine residents died from mesothelioma.
Some of Maine’s biggest employers in the past used asbestos, industries such as “paper companies and chemical companies and the shipyard industry,” Bang says. “A recent study at the National Cancer Institute shows that workers employed in shipyards face elevated risk from abestos-related disease.”
Exposure to asbestos, a mineral that comes in masses of strong, flexible fibers, can also lead to lung cancer and another illness known as asbestosis, a chronic lung disease. But the prognosis is the worst for mesothelioma. By the time most patients are diagnosed with mesothelioma, they are usually given five to 16 months to live.

Asbestos use was banned in 1975 in most types of residential and commercial insulation materials, and this should lead to a decrease in the number of mesothelioma deaths after 2010, according to a new government study. The number of malignant mesothelioma deaths increased from 2,482 in 1999 to 2,704 in 2005, Ki Moon Bang, Ph.D., of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and colleagues reported in the April 24 issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. The 1975 ban on the use of asbestos in most types of residential and commercial insulation materials should begin to be reflected in a lower mesothelioma mortality rate. “Because mesothelioma manifests 20 to 40 years after first exposure, the number of mesothelioma deaths will likely peak by 2010,” the authors wrote.
The EPA tried to completely ban the use of asbestos in 1989. Unfortunately, that ban was overturned by a federal appeals court. As a result, “an estimated 1.3 million construction and general industry workers potentially are being exposed to asbestos,” the authors wrote. There are also concerns that carbon nanotubes used increasingly in manufacturing may have the same carcinogenic potential of asbestos.
The authors reported that 26 states had mesothelioma death rates that exceeded the national average, including six states that had death rates >20 per 1 million or greater: Maine (27.5), Wyoming (22.2), West Virginia (21.0), Pennsylvania (20.8), New Jersey (20.2), and Washington (20.1).
The Mesothelioma Attorney Alliance has local lawyers in Maine, Wyoming, West Virgina, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
