Symptoms

Symptoms may vary depending upon where the cancer is located.

If a person has pleural mesothelioma (located in the lungs), symptoms may include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Painful breathing
  • Chest pain under the rib cage
  • Lumps of tissue under the skin of the chest
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Dry, unproductive cough

A person with peritoneal mesothelioma (located in the abdomen) may exhibit the following symptoms:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Abdominal swelling
  • A change in bowel habits, such as more frequent constipation or diarrhea
  • Lumps of tissue in the abdomen
  • Unexplained weight loss
