Introduction to Mesothelioma

Types of Mesothelioma

  • Pleural mesothelioma is malignant mesothelioma which affects the membranes surrounding the lungs (the pleura). This can cause shortness of breath and pain in the chest.
  • Peritoneal mesothelioma is malignant mesothelioma which affects the tissue surrounding the organs in the abdomen. This can cause weight loss and abdominal pain and swelling due to a buildup of fluid in the abdomen.
  • Benign or fibrous mesothelioma, which is extremely rare, is a noncancerous tumor of the pleura (lining of the lungs.

Diagnosing Malignant Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is often difficult to diagnose, because its symptoms are similar to those of a number of other conditions. Diagnosis begins with a review of the patient’s medical history, including any history of exposure to asbestos. A complete physical examination may be performed, including x-rays of the abdomen or chest and a lung function test. A CT (or CAT) scan or MRI may be used to take pictures of areas inside the body.

Treatment and Prognosis

If diagnosed early enough, surgery may cure mesothelioma. However, the average survival time varies from 4 to 18 months after diagnosis. When the disease is too advanced for surgery, chemotherapy or radiation may be used to reduce symptoms, but a cure is usually not possible. Combining certain chemotherapy drugs may help decrease symptoms and improve survival. Supportive treatment (such as pain relief and oxygen) may also help to relieve symptoms.

Clinical Trials

There are dozens of clinical trials that may provide additional treatment options. You can get information about enrolling in a clinical trial at www.clinicaltrials.gov.
